First Look: The New Toyota Supra, A Crazy-Wide Racing Version

The hype is finally over, and it seems the photos leaked by a Japanese car magazine were real. This is the new Supra, albeit a wide-body endurance racing version with a massive table top of a wing. The leaked photos, printed on glossy paper in a magazine, made the proportions of this car look a bit off. However, good news is in store as the race-going version, courtesy of Toyota Gazoo Racing, features a much more aesthetically appealing front end than depicted in the photos. We can reasonably expect that the road-going Supra won’t be nearly as wide, and will have a more plush interior. Oh, and don’t expect that wind to be an option either.

This version bodes well for the Supra in my opinion. The new iteration has a lot to live up to. There are plenty of people who think there shouldn’t be a new “Supra” at all, our own Keaton Williams included. However, I think if Toyota plays their cards right, they could reinvent the supra name into something that can keep up with modern entry-level supercars. It will be crucial for them to not make it a leather-clad luxury car. An interior that hints at the car’s racing heritage and looks to go with it will be crucial, not to mention handling which I don’t think will be an issue. For now though, we’ll have to wait until the Geneva International Motor Show this Thursday to see the real thing.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the new Supra will live up to its namesake?
