Have you ever seen one of those detachable steering wheels people but on their cars? Well, if you own a 2014-2018 Ford Focus of Lincoln MKZ, you already have one! Earlier today, Ford announced a massive 1.4 million-vehicle recall due to steering wheel failures. The failure in question presents the possibility of the steering wheel becoming detached while driving. As of today, there have been 10 confirmed reports of the steering wheel coming off entirely, and dozens of reports where the steering wheel becomes loose.
This recall, paired with Ford’s earlier recall of their door latches, paints a poor picture of Ford’s quality control. The steering wheel recall is far larger than the door latch recall, and presents a much more dangerous situation. An NHTSA report from November details a incident where the driver was travelling at “approximately 55 (miles per hour), the steering wheel turned 360 degrees independently without warning. In addition, the steering wheel detached from the vehicle”.
The recall does not affect all Focus and MKZ sedans during those years. It only affects vehicles manufactured in specific Ford plants. If you are the owner of a vehicle in question, ask your local Ford dealership if you need a recall or not.
